Why you should visit… Santa Clara Church

sta-clara

For some time and due to restoration work the church had to be close to the public. This is a monument you should, for sure, visit while in Porto. Here’s why: Santa Clara is one of the most beautiful churches in the city!

Santa Clara

It is located just beside the remains of the Fernandina Wall, between the Sé Cathedral and the Guindais Funicular, and it’s interior is completely decorated with gold wood-carving in a typical Baroque style. The church was built in 1467 together with a monastery. At the end of the 19th century, with the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal the building was abandoned and got a bit degraded, only being renovated when became property of the city.

The main entrance of the church is dated from 1697 and the work on the main chapel was executed on 1730 by Miguel Francisco da Silva, a carver originally from Lisbon that was working on the north of Portugal at that time.

In 2015 the exterior of the church was renovated and now in 2016 – celebrating its 600th years of existence – the interior is under some great restauration and conservation work. It is a world heritage site, a national monument, and you should definitely check it on your visit to Porto!
