Porto has some of the greatest examples of golden wood-carving works from the Baroque era, unforgettable facades from the Romanesque period and numerous details of different times. Porto’s history can be fully understood after you visit its churches, monasteries and chapels. At the same time you will learn the epic episodes that shaped the city’s character.
During our Churches Tour, we will take you to the most important religious temples in the city, like the Sé Cathedral. This is a fortress church built in the XII century that was the stage for the royal wedding of Philippa de Lancaster and King John I.
Let’s climb up 240 steps and admire the breathtaking view of Porto from the top of Clérigos Tower, designed by Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th century and a great example of Baroque architecture. We will also walk around the ancient Jewish area and admire the Monastery of São Bento da Vitória, which served as a military headquarters during the city’s siege in the 19th century!
Other points of interest are the twin churches of Carmo and Carmelitas, the tiles of Congregados and Santo Ildefonso churches and the Santa Clara Church – a Baroque gem that’s going to conservation work.
AtWill’s guides have been living in Porto for many years! So feel comfortable to ask anything that you want to know about the city: where to eat the best Francesinha or Bifana, where to find the best Wine shops, what to do on weekends… We will be so glad to help you!
