Streets of Porto – Praça dos Poveiros

poveiros

Praça dos Poveiros
, located at the end of Passos Manuel Street, is a meeting point for locals and a must-go for foodies! At this square people gather to talk, drink “finos” and play music. It is a very authentic and low-profile place, so if you’re looking for fanciness this is definitely not the place for it! But if you want to try some of the best local food – which are simple and delicious, as the true Portuguese gastronomy is – with good price and outside the touristic radar, then you must go to Praça dos Poveiros.

Here’s our list of places to go and food to try once you’re there:

The first suggestion is, of course, the famous Casa Guedes! Their delicious pork sandwich served with an amazing melted piece of Serra da Estrela cheese is to die for. Don’t get scared by the queue on the entrance: it goes quite fast and is totally worth the waiting. To drink, have a glass of Espadal.

Go to Buraquinho for more traditional food, like papas de sarrabulho, caldo verde and tripes. Our suggestion is for you to try the alheira, a sausage made with different kinds of meat (usually veal, duck, chicken or rabbit) and bread. At Buraquinho they served it deep-fried and accompanied by fries. Enjoy it with a beer!

Another typical sandwich you have to try are the cachorros – we could translated it as hot dogs, but the ones we have in Porto are so different that it would not make much sense! At República dos Cachorros you can find one of the best examples in town: crunchy bread, fresh sausage, melted cheese and an optional spicy sauce. It also goes very well with a “fino”.

As you can see, there’s tons of options for every taste as Praça dos Poveiros! But if you want not only try but also learn about the origins and history of Portuguese gastronomy, book a Food Tour Porto with us! We will try 5 different petiscos along with 5 different drinks. There will be no need of lunch or dinner after this tour!
