Outside Porto – Arouca

Discover Portugal with AtWill’s tips! Today: Arouca.

Every week we give you tips of places to explore after your visit to Porto! This Saturday our suggestion is Arouca, a small town located 60 km away from Porto that is the perfect place for a day trip if you are a nature lover! Famous for its Geopark, Arouca has different activities for everyone, from radical sports to calm old villages. Check here our tips on what to do and visit there!

Arouca Geopark:

Recognised since 2009 by UNESCO as a Geological Heritage of Humanity, this place is a true open-air geological museum! With 41 geosites (sites of geological interest) in 328km2 area, the Arouca Geopark stands out for its uniqueness in a scientific, didactic and touristic point of view. It offers perfect conditions for the practice of canyoning, kayaking, rafting and mountaineering! Some points of interests are the Castanheira Nodular Granite (Pedras Parideiras), the Canelas Giant Trilobites and the Vale do Paiva Ichnofossils.

Passadiços do Paiva – Paiva Walkways:

Enjoy an 8km walk surrounded by untouched nature! Located on the left bank of the Paiva River, this walkway has a unique landscape, full of waterfalls, local animal species and even quartz crystals. According to their website, it is a “journey through biology, geology and archeology that will remain, of course, in heart, soul and in mind of any nature lover”! The walk takes around 2:30 hours to complete and its difficulty level is classified as “hard”, but take your time to enjoy the views and take great pictures!

Other points of interest:

If you want to relax and visit some more calm places, you can check the Arouca Monastery, some ancient churches and or historical sites like de Torre dos Mouros. And, of course, you must try the local food! The Arouquesa beef (derived from the Arouquesa cattle) is very famous, and also the local Pão-de-ló (slices of a very moist cake covered in a sugary icing!). Try both accompanied with some great green wine, very typical of the Douro region!
