International Museum Day – Clérigos Tower

Many museums and monuments are open today and had diferente free activities. AtWill couldn’t miss this event! With multiple choices in what to do, we decided to rediscover our ex-libris Clérigos Tower and Church.

Clérigos was designed by Nicolau Nasoni, an Italian architect and artist who worked in the north of Portugal during the 18th century.

The church construction began around 1732-33, and was finish in 1749. The facade shows off its extremely interesting and stunning baroque details. The interior has a single nave in granite and marble, covered in baroque carvings. It is a great demonstration of the talent of the architect! In the main chapel, our attention goes to the polychromatic altarpiece by Manuel Porto. The two beautiful Iberian organs  still work and every day you can go for a concert!

Nonetheless, what sets this construction apart is the stunning Tower. It is the most distinctive landmark of Porto and it can be seen from countless places in town! It was once the highest tower in Portugal and, in 1910, was classified as a Nacional Monument.

Constructed in granite at the top of the western side of the church, it was finished in 1763.  The tower rises up to 76 meters of elegance forming rhythmic steps, before growing to its crowning glory: the round clock house. The baroque decoration is extremely delicate. Nicolau Nasoni’s work can be seen in several places of Porto but Clérigos Tower is his most recognize and important piece.

Today, you can climb the 240 steps and experience a magnificent view over Porto and its rooftops, buildings, parks… You can even see the sea!
