Tripeiro is the nickname use to designate the people who are born and raised in Porto. Its origin dates back to 1415, when infant D. Henrique was about to start his expedition to conquer Ceuta. History said that the population of the city of Porto was so supportive to the infant that they decided to give all the meat they had to the troops and the tripes were the only thing left to eat! Until today, Tripas à moda do Porto (“Porto-style tripe”) is a very popular dish and you can find in any typical restaurant.
